I. Numbers That Didn’t Add Up
The afternoon sun reflected off the shiny cars parked in front of the mansion. Robert Miller, the chauffeur, and his daughter Emma Miller, who helped with the house cleaning, were taking a short break after receiving their monthly pay.
“Dad, did they pay you for the month already?” Emma asked softly.
“Yes, sweetheart. They gave me $1,300. What about you?”
“I received exactly $1,000, Dad,” she replied with a sigh.
What they didn’t know was that the owner of the mansion, Mr. Harrison Caldwell, was standing near an open window and had heard the entire conversation.
And he knew perfectly well how much money left his accounts every month for staff salaries.
Those numbers were suddenly very alarming.
“I want both of you in my office in 20 minutes,” Caldwell ordered sharply from the balcony.

Mr. Caldwell first called in his trusted secretary, Diana Parker, who had been responsible for managing the staff payroll for years.
“Diana, confirm this month’s payments for me. How much did you pay the chauffeur and the cleaning assistant?”

“Sir, exactly as you instructed. I paid $2,000 to the chauffeur and $1,500 to the girl.”

“Repeat in front of Diana what I heard in the parking lot,” Caldwell said firmly.
“How much did you receive today?”
“I was paid $1,300, sir,” Robert said, confused.
“And I received $1,000,” Emma added nervously.
Diana turned pale but quickly tried to defend herself with arrogance.
“Well, they owed me money! They borrowed from me before, and I simply deducted the debt.”
Robert and Emma looked at each other in shock.
“What are you talking about, Ms. Parker?” Robert said.
“We’ve never borrowed a single dollar from you. In fact, sometimes it’s hard for us to make ends meet because of the unexplained deductions you’ve been making from our pay.”
IV. Immediate Justice
Mr. Caldwell slammed his hand on the desk.
“That’s enough, Diana!
I trusted you completely, and you’ve been stealing not only from me—but worse, you’ve been taking food from the mouths of hardworking people.”
He pointed toward the door.
“You’re fired. Right now. Leave my property immediately.”
Security escorted Diana out of the building, humiliated and stripped of the position she had used to abuse her power.
V. New Beginnings
Mr. Caldwell looked at Robert and Emma thoughtfully.
He knew loyalty and honesty were rare qualities.
“Robert,” he said, “starting today, you’re no longer just my chauffeur. I need you as my right-hand man, someone I can trust to make sure something like this never happens again.”
Then he turned to Emma.
“And you… I can see that you’re intelligent and honest. Diana left a position open, and I want you to become my new secretary. I’ll personally teach you everything you need to know.”
Father and daughter could hardly believe their luck.
From a simple conversation in the parking lot came an opportunity that changed their lives forever.
Meanwhile, greed left Diana with nothing.
