PART 2 — THE CHILD WHO WASN'T SUPPOSED TO EXIST

The entire restaurant remained silent.

Eleanor Whitmore stared at the photograph inside the silver locket.

Her hands trembled.

The little girl watched carefully.

"Tell me my mother lied."

Nobody in the room moved.

For the first time in decades, Eleanor looked afraid.

Not of losing money.

Not of losing power.

Of losing certainty.

"What's your name?" she asked quietly.

The girl hesitated.

"Grace."

Eleanor closed her eyes.

The room spun.

Because eight years earlier she had chosen that exact name.

A name nobody else knew.

Not even her closest friends.

Several guests exchanged confused glances.

Grace noticed the change immediately.

"You know it."

Eleanor couldn't answer.

Instead, she asked,

"Who raised you?"

"My mother."

"And where is she now?"

Grace looked down.

The confidence disappeared from her face.

"She died six months ago."

A painful silence followed.

The child reached into her coat again.

This time she pulled out a folded letter.

"My mother told me to give you this if I ever found you."

Eleanor slowly opened it.

The handwriting froze her blood.

She recognized it instantly.

Sophia.

The nurse who had worked at the private clinic eight years ago.

The nurse who vanished shortly after Eleanor gave birth.

The letter was short.

Painfully short.

"If Grace is standing before you, it means I failed to keep my promise.

They told you your daughter died.

They lied.

I couldn't let them throw her away.

So I took her.

I've spent eight years protecting her.

Forgive me."

The restaurant exploded with whispers.

Eleanor couldn't breathe.

Her daughter hadn't died.

May you like

She had been stolen.

TO BE CONTINUED.
