PART 2 — THE PROMISE SHE NEVER FORGOT

Ten years passed faster than either of them expected.

Michael still kept the photograph of Sophie in her white sneakers.

The original pair was long gone.

But the memory never faded.

Neither did the promise.

"When I grow up, I'll pay you back."

Most adults would have forgotten.

Sophie never did.

At sixteen, she volunteered at shelters every weekend.

At eighteen, she earned a scholarship.

At twenty-one, she entered medical school.

And through every milestone, Michael remained beside her.

School plays.

Graduations.

Late-night study sessions.

Heartbreaks.

Victories.

Every moment.

People often assumed he was her biological father.

Neither of them bothered correcting anyone.

One autumn afternoon, Sophie returned home carrying a thick envelope.

Michael looked up from the kitchen table.

"Good news?"

Sophie smiled.

The same smile she had worn in the shoe store years ago.

"I got accepted."

Michael stood immediately.

"Accepted where?"

She slid the letter toward him.

The top of the page displayed the name of one of the most respected pediatric hospitals in the country.

A residency program.

Her dream.

For a moment, Michael couldn't speak.

His eyes filled with tears.

"You did it."

Sophie laughed.

"So did you."

He shook his head.

"No. You did."

But Sophie disagreed.

Because she knew the truth.

A little girl with broken shoes had never gotten there alone.

That evening they celebrated with pizza and cheap ice cream.

Exactly the way they had celebrated every important moment.

Simple.

Ordinary.

Perfect.

As the night came to an end, Sophie handed Michael a small wrapped box.

"What is this?"

"Open it."

Inside was a tiny silver keychain shaped like a sneaker.

Michael stared at it.

Confused.

Then Sophie smiled.

"You bought me my first pair."

His throat tightened.

"I remember."

"No," she said softly.

"You changed my life."

For the first time in years, Michael was speechless.

Because he suddenly realized something.

The little girl he had rescued no longer needed rescuing.

May you like

She had become extraordinary on her own.

TO BE CONTINUED.
