PART 2 — THE WOMAN IN THE WHEELCHAIR

The ballroom stood frozen.
Victoria Langford's arm remained trapped in Emma's grip.
Neither woman moved.
Neither spoke.
The shattered wineglass still glittered across the marble floor.
Then a voice cut through the silence.
"Let go of her."
Everyone turned.
A tall man stepped out from the shadows near a marble pillar.
The room changed instantly.
Conversations stopped.
Powerful people straightened in their seats.
Some guests even looked nervous.
Vincent Moretti had entered the scene.
Victoria's confidence vanished.
Emma recognized him immediately.
Every newspaper in Chicago had published his photograph.
The rumors.
The headlines.
The stories.
All of them suddenly felt real.
Emma released Victoria's wrist.
Her heart pounded.
She expected to be fired.
Escorted out.
Arrested, maybe.
Instead, Vincent walked directly past Victoria.
Past the crowd.
Past everyone.
He stopped beside the elderly woman in the wheelchair.
"Mother."
The entire ballroom gasped.
Emma stared.
Mother?
The woman she had protected wasn't just another guest.
She was Isabella Moretti.
Vincent knelt beside her.
"Are you hurt?"
Isabella shook her head.
Then pointed at Emma.
"She protected me."
Vincent slowly stood.
For several seconds, he simply looked at Emma.
The room held its breath.
Then he nodded once.
A gesture so small most people missed it.
But everyone understood what it meant.
Respect.
For the first time that night, Emma felt visible.
Unfortunately, Victoria was not finished.
"You can't seriously be rewarding a waitress for grabbing me."
The room went silent again.
Vincent turned toward her.
His eyes became cold.
"What exactly was she supposed to do?"
Victoria opened her mouth.
No answer came.
Because everyone had seen what happened.
Everyone.

And for the first time in years, Victoria Langford found herself standing completely alone.
