PART 2 — THE PROMISE INSIDE THE OLD SHIRT

The showroom was silent.
Every eye remained fixed on Daniel Carter.
"What promise?" Madison finally asked.
Daniel looked at his son.
For a moment, it seemed like he was reconsidering.
Then he sighed.
"Three years ago, Caleb's mother died."
The room froze.
Caleb lowered his eyes.
Nobody had expected that.
Daniel continued.
"Before she passed away, she spent months in a hospital bed."
His voice grew softer.
"One day, she asked Caleb a question."
Daniel looked at his son.
"She asked him what kind of man he wanted to become."
The showroom listened.
"Not what kind of businessman. Not what kind of millionaire. What kind of man."
Caleb swallowed hard.
Daniel smiled sadly.
"That gray shirt was the shirt he wore the day they worked on an old engine together for the last time."
Several people looked at the faded shirt differently now.
It wasn't old.
It was priceless.
"Before she died, she made him promise something."
Madison whispered,
"What was it?"
Daniel answered.
"Never let money decide who you are."
The room fell silent.
Caleb finally spoke.
"Mom said that if people only respected me because of my last name or our money, then I would never know who truly cared."
Nobody laughed anymore.
Nobody looked at the shirt the same way.
Daniel put a hand on his son's shoulder.
"So every year on her birthday, Caleb wears that shirt."
Madison felt a knot form in her throat.
She suddenly remembered mocking it.
Mocking the last memory a boy had of his mother.
For the first time in years...
she felt ashamed.
